Manager, Clinical Research Program

We are seeking creative and energetic applicants for the position of Manager, Clinical Research. This position is responsible for leadership of the Center for Health Studies (CHS) Clinical Research Program and will develop and implement research and administrative strategies that support clinical trials and the research projects conducted in the CHS research clinic and/or Group Health Cooperative (GHC) delivery system. Located in downtown Seattle, the Center for Health Studies is a non-profit research institute nationally and internationally recognized for its research in health services, behavioral medicine, mental health, women’s health, alternative medicine, and clinical epidemiology. The Center, with a budget of almost $20 million, derives the majority of its funding through the National Institutes of Health.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Administrative Leadership:

  • Direct the administrative and programmatic resources of the CHS Clinical Research Program.
  • Hire, supervise, and train clinical staff. Provide performance feedback and mentoring. Insure unit is fully staffed, identify project management issues, and advocate for resources.
  • Facilitate the design and development of protocols to ensure data quality and scientific integrity. Insure the successful implementation of systems, policies, and procedures that assist Clinic staff in completing a scope of work, on time and within budget.
  • In conjunction with scientific leadership and CHS Grants and Contracts Administration, participate in the negotiations of trial budgets and contracts with Industry sponsors.
  • Insure that clinical studies are implemented and conducted in accordance with FDA regulations and GCP/IHI guidance.
  • Develop and manage the CHS Research Clinic's core budget. Determine clinical costs and develop and implement appropriate cost metrics.
  • Initiate strategic planning and goal setting in the area of future program emphasis, administrative structure, technology needs, and growth.

Scientific Collaboration:

  • Provide expertise and serve as a resource to Scientific Investigators and study staff in the design, development, and implementation of clinical research, including recruitment, data collection, and project management strategies.
  • Model new and innovative clinical data collection methods and technologies.
  • Participate in the publication and presentation of research papers in peer-reviewed journals and at national meetings.

Liaison to Health Care Delivery System:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of research in the Group Health delivery system.
  • Stay informed of changes in Group Health Cooperative's clinical structure, staffing and procedures.
  • Identify emerging research efforts in the delivery system and the issues that could impact the ability of CHS/GHC to undertake such projects.
  • Proactively engage in problem solving and process development as a means to facilitate research.
  • Serve as the formal liaison between CHS-GHC and the various funding agencies supporting these efforts.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

  • Thorough understanding of regulatory policies governing industry practices required.
  • Knowledgeable about clinical assessment protocols, clinical technology and equipment, patient safety, and quality control requirements required.
  • Excellent organizational, supervisory, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and within a team setting.
  • Experience with industry contract negotiation and budgeting preferred.

YEARS AND TYPE OF EXPERIENCE:

  • 5-7 years experience associated with clinic operations, clinical trials research, or clinical data collection required.
  • Experience with protocol development, study coordination, and clinical monitoring procedures required.
  • Demonstrated experience in working through all stages of a research project required.
  • 3-5 years experience managing or directing the operations of a research clinic or unit and direct experience with a healthcare delivery system preferred.

EDUCATION:

  • MPH/MSN/MA or terminal degree requiring a research-based thesis in a health-related field required.
  • Doctoral degree in related field and relevant clinical background preferred.

CERTIFICATION:

  • CRA certification preferred.
