Vivarium Manager

Ikaria is an exciting new company located in Seattle dedicated to the development and commercialization of new products based on reversible metabolic control for its use as a treatment for acute trauma, during surgery and extending the length of time that organs and tissues are viable for transplantation.

Description:

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic vivarium manager for our new animal facility. The successful candidate will have a self-starter mentality and solid hands-on knowledge of rodent laboratory animal care, vivarium management, IACUC and current regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all activities for the daily function and operation of the vivarium.
  • Daily care and sanitation of animals according to individual species/strain requirements and applicable regulatory and institutional standards.
  • Daily health assessment and monitoring by performing daily health checks and sentinel program.
  • Regular monitoring and documentation of optimal housing and environmental conditions.
  • Maintain all facility records, including daily room logs, inspection reports, health records, protocols, census, and equipment.
  • Develop, maintain and assure adherence to standard operating procedures; train all animal users and other personnel entering the animal facility with regards to facility operations and animal care.
  • Support researchers in their studies through dosing, clinical observations and basic surgical procedures as needed.
  • Set up and manage IACUC; participate in all IACUC activities including facility inspections.
  • Coordinate institutional health program in consultation with the attending veterinarian.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements including USDA regulations, AAALAC standards and PHS/OLAW guidelines.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry, Biology, Animal Science or related field and at least 5 years of experience in a laboratory animal facility.
  • Prior managerial and IACUC experience required; AALAS certification is a plus.
  • Work with animals in a research environment, and to provide humane care and treatment to those animals.
  • Technical knowledge of anesthesia, euthanasia and surgical procedures performed on rodents.
  • Self-motivated team player.
  • Must be able to work weekends or holidays if needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Must be able to work with animals while wearing personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, lab coat or scrubs and other apparel as required.
  • Must not be allergic to animals or their bedding.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
